Social media is now a central part of the tourism experience, impacting where people travel, what they do and what they recommend, with 24% of people who use social media researching holiday destinations or travel offers. Social media now ensures that consumers also take an active role in the communication, relationship management and brand development process associated with destinations and their tourism offering.

What else can you do as an operator to take advantage of Social Media?
- Assist in creating memorable and photographic experiences for your guests and customers. Exceed people’s expectations.
- Encourage people to share – free WiFi, a reward for sharing, or simply ask.
- If you don’t have a large social media presence, dip your toe in the water by downloading Instagram to your smart phone and start snapping and tagging.
Instagram – how and why?
If you’re unsure where to start with Instagram, here’s a great step-by-step guide to getting started on Instagram:
Once you’ve downloaded Instagram, whenever you come across something photo-worthy, you can take action (participate, rather than just observe). Write a concise caption for your pic and remember to hashtag. Tag the town name e.g. #mansfield and also TNE’s Instagram account #seehighcountry.
You’ll soon develop a feel for what resonates, and what doesn’t. One of the key things to keep in mind is that you’re letting the image do most of the talking. Don’t spoil your great shot by using a caption that sounds like an ad. A subtle caption with a strong image is most often more powerful in the Social Media space.
While Social Media can be seen as a challenge, by facilitating memorable and happily shared experiences for your current guests… you’re also creating trusted advocates who’ll actively share and promote the great work you do.
